Bilirubin Blues. . . I mean, Yellows

POOR LITTLE JUDE!

Things here have been pretty fun and full of discovery! Our poor little Jude had a really high bilirubin level (19.2) which is typical of Barlow babies. He had to go under the bili lights for 3 days and 2 nights, and it was awful for everyone.

What a way to spend the first days of your life!

Here are more pictures for your viewing pleasure. . .

It's so hard to be little!

Thank you for bearing with these overbearing parents. Happy New Year to everyone!

Love,
Hilary

Some Goings-On

Hi Everyone! I have apparently forgotten which order you have to upload images in to make it all cohesive. I just wanted to add some recent pictures from our lives. Here is a picture of me about 2 weeks ago. I am even bigger now. We have 2 or 3 more weeks before this baby should come. Carl is amazed by and respectful of my girth. Last week was my last full-time week of work. For the next two weeks, all I have to do is work 1 or 2 8-hour shifts per week! Then I conveniently get 3 months off (1/2 of it will be paid), and then I only have to go back and work 1 or 2 shifts a week! I am excited to be a mom and to see our son on the outside. . . at last!

Here we are at Carl's parents' house. I think I look like I'm in the middle of a contraction.
Carl has been enjoying the fun of baby showers. We have had 4 of them, and Carl has been present at 3. He is already such a good dad!

In other news, we went to Moab Thanksgiving weekend. Here is Kane Creek Canyon where we went petroglyph hunting. I think I'd like to do this on bikes one day.

I know I look beautiful in this picture. We found this petroglyph of a mother giving birth to a breech baby (feet-first). Carl and I were thinking how amazing it is that through all the centuries and centuries of history, the family and childbirth have always remained a central theme in the lives of all people. That shows me that family is indeed sacred and needs to be protected.

Carl and the little petroglyph look disgusted at each other in this picture.

And here is one just for fun! I already sent this to a lot of you, but I can't get over it! I sent it to Robin, and she commented that OSHA would probably be upset with this clear violation of the patient's consent.

What else is going on? Carl is nearly done with this block of school. He's been working as an associate's degree RN, and is now working on his bachelor's RN through the Chamberlain College of Nursing. He will graduate in June. We're thinking of taking the GRE at the same time. Then all we have to do is apply for anesthetist school and wait around to hear back. Carl is enjoying working in the MICU @ the VA. Carl is also in charge of the Christmas program in our ward. He has done a great job picking music and arranging numbers. I am contributing by singing in a sextet, a trio, and playing the violin as long as I'm not in labor.

Me?? I have a new hobby. I sell stuff on the internet! Well, I sold one thing on the internet. . . our little loveseat. I love the concept! People come to your house, give you money, and haul away your junk. Why has it taken me so long to discover this joy?

In conclusion, we are planning on a waterbirth at the birth center here in Salt Lake. We're taking hypnobirthing classes at the U which have been really helpful in teaching Carl how to keep me relaxed and not freaking out as the contractions pick up. We watched a GREAT documentary on natural childbirth called "The Business of Being Born". You can get it through Netflix or at the library, and I think everyone would find it very interesting. Strangely, it is produced by Ricki Lake. She sure did a great job, though.

Okay, that's it for now! See you all soon, and Merry Christmas!

Isaac is becoming a person! He is starting to smile at us and act like he knows who we are. His eyes are getting better too. He's starting to follow us with his eyes when we walk around the room.

We are carefully monitoring his growth. Joseph got tired of waiting for us to restart swimming

lessons so he took measures into his own hands. He takes water safety very seriously.

After we came back from Utah...

Things took off quickly as soon as we got home. Chase started school the very next day and I had to start figuring out fun things to do to keep Enoch entertained again (a task gratefully relinquished to family members while in Utah). Before we get much more into it I wanted to post this cute picture of Enoch at his first swimming pool...yeah, he's pretty happy. One day while Chase was mudding the entrance to the kitchen it got very quiet except for a few giddy squeaks here or there. We looked over and found Enoch up to his elbows in the sheetrocking mud, VERY proud too. That was after we'd stripped him down from getting into the bowl of mudding water. As we've been remodeling I've discovered a more convenient and aerobic way to paint the walls.

Among the work we've found time to play. We took Enoch to the beach of Lake Champlain where Chase taught him how to go under water. We went as a ward so Enoch got the opportunity to terrorize the little girls a year older than him. He chased the brunette around the beach for a while eliciting tears from the girl but snickers from the parents. Later that week I took the Booger to Shelburne Farms where he chased chickens around for HOURS quickly learning he could dominate in the relationship. Through it all Enoch has developed DRASTICALLY in his verbal skills (over-dramatized wink). He's learning his colors while expressing his artistic side through a variety of mediums.

The Champlain Valley Fair opened August 25th and we were ready and waiting! The boy was thrilled to be able to experience his first rides (Enoch was pretty excited too)...

...I think. He was sad to get off the Mary-Go-Round but only because he didn't know we were going on... the "Spinning Dragons" next!

Followed by the KKK sheep and...

CARNIES!!!!!

Labor Day weekend we took off for a camping/sailing adventure. We took our little sailboat out for her maiden voyage (as far as WE were concerned). We motored to an island in Lake Champlain, set up camp and wallowed in the joys of S'mores! Enoch is an awesome little camper. The next day was six hours of windless sailing. It was a beautiful day, turned out to be the last day that warm this year. Mmm-mmm-mmm! Noth'n like sitting on a boat with nowhere to go, relaxing reggae in the background and a toddler who loves to stay in the cabin! Last night as we were about to take Enoch upstairs to go to bed we asked for our usual "Goodnight Kiss." Enoch puckered his lips and held out his chin walking first to Chase, then to me and immediately to the banister at the bottom of the stares. To which he promptly gave a kiss and headed up the stairs for bed. Apparently there is a secret love between him and the banister. Here is the Boog playing you some songs as we bid you all farewell.

I thought that I would start this blog with the last thing I can remember doing, which is worth telling.

I went on a cruise in March with a shlode of friends to Catalina Island and Ensanada Mexico (dirty place).

This is Grant and myself jumping and clicking our heels in a fit of joy because our cruise was about to start.

I really don't have any sweet stories to tell you about this adventure. We mostly ate until we couldn't breath anymore when we would try to tie our shoes. We rented some bikes and rode around the whole island and that was a blast. Grant and I rode to a little peak that is there and had a very good view of the whole east shore of the island and also of the route we had to ride our bikes down in order to return to our group. It was amazing.

Ensenada was...fine.

Here's a video of Grant and myself on our bike time and what kind of mischief we got ourselves into. This isn't really that cool of a video but I wanted to try putting one on this blog thingy.

After that Tiffany and I got engaged on Memorial day up at the cabin. I don't have a picture of it but I think Hilary has the first picture taken after we were engaged. We still had to take pictures for our invitation and we both started getting bored until we found some statues to play with. One is tickling me and it looks like Tiffany is about to lay one on this old metal man.

I sincerely hope that you enjoyed this sweet time with me. Thank you.

NYC

A few weekends ago we got the amazingly unexpected opportunity to go to New York City with some friends from Vermont. Their daughter dances in the American Ballet Theater and got tickets for all of us to go see her dance in, "The Merry Widow." They were box seats too which was an extra fun surprise! We went to central park where Enoch found a water fountain to play in. He went shorts-less the rest of the day because they were soaked through,
as you can see in the family picture at the fountain. We went to F.A.O. Schwartz where we finally found some little construction trucks for Enoch.

He also tried to play on the "Big," piano, you know the movie "Big?" That day was the 4th of July and we got to watch the Macy's firework show from Roosevelt island. We got to take a tram over the East river! Although it sprinkled through most of it, we had a great time, and Enoch slept on the subway the whole way home.

The next day we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which didn't last long with Enoch...apparently walls of old pictures are not entertaining for a one-and-a-half year old. I caught a blurring pic of him standing in front of a Jackson Pollock painting though. That was after his tantrum in the VanGough room.
Before we left we took a ferry to the Statue of Liberty and to Ellis Island, two very moving memorials. A person feels connected at Ellis Island, connected to their past because their ancestry most likely walked those halls. At times it felt almost reverent.

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and so did our trip.

It was followed with more house renovations and a fun little discovery of blackberries in our backyard. Enoch B-lines for the bushes now whenever we go outside.

I thought that called for a real berry picking outing, so we went to a farm and picked strawberries. Mmm-mmm-mmm JAM!
It's rained pretty consistently the last couple months. One day we walked in the backyard where Enoch learned about the joys of puddles.

Things are going well in the east. We love you all!

News from Headquarters

Hi everyone,

Sorry to not be contributing much lately (ever). There isn't much going on here that seems of interest. We don't take our camera to work or the grocery store so I don't have any for now. Just to keep you all up on a few events:
I just got back from spending 3 days with Grandma K while Ken and Marianne were in Colorado helping Nathan and Charisse pull of a 4th of July neighborhood breakfast that Nathan got started in his neighborhood. She is doing well, walking every day up and down the foothills of Provo, hair appointments, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, cryptogram puzzles, reading, and generally keeping busy. We set up a quilt for Brian and Tiffany so Rosena and other family members can work on it while there with Grandma.
Dad and I are going to the Tetons this Wednesday for about 5 days (we'll try to take some pictures for you), and Dad is leaving for a week long training trip in Tucson the day after we get back. I'm having a hard time squeezing in one night a week to work.
Wedding plans are moving along nicely. I hope you all got your invitations. My next big priority is to get them addressed and send out between all the trips Dad wants to take.
Aunt Una Loy is having more severe problems with dementia and Grandpa still doesn't want to put her in care facility. She doesn't know him anymore but he is thinking he can handle it with cooking and cleaning help. We'll see. He still refuses to move closer to either family for help. It may take a car accident and losing his drivers license or other major disaster to get him to see that he needs more help than what an outside agency can give him.
We look forward to seeing all of you in August. I miss you all and love you all very much. You are the light of my life!

Love,
Mom
